Review of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) by Brian O — 18 Aug 2008
The Testament of Dr. Mabuse is a prescient film that allegories the rise of Nazi Germany through Dr. Mabuse's vision of an Empire of Crime, where random crime creates chaos and instills fear in the population, and brutality and terror become the pillars of social organization.
Fritz Lang uses a surrealistic, decoupage filming technique to highlight the subconscious underpinnings of totalitarianism. The film is fast-paced and suspenseful, which keeps it from becoming a boring lesson in politics.
