Review of The Testament of Dr. Mabuse (1933) by Geonard Y — 29 Jul 2006
Directed by Fritz Lang.
Starring Oscar Beregi Sr., Gustav Diessl, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, Karl Meixner, Otto Wernicke.
ItÕs part detective part supernatural story of a mysterious doctor who commits crime via telepathic powers. Like its predecessor ÒM,Ó Lang shows human malevolence pursued by the hands of justice. The acting is effective and LangÕs masterful use of the camera makes every scene a revelation. Even though the phasing is a bit confusing and over-explanatory, for an early 30s film, this is beguiling cinema. Lang is without a doubt, one of the great innovators.
Best Scene: The doctor's hypnotic eyes and penguin nose.
