Review of The Tenant (1976) by Eddie D — 21 May 2010
Curious psychological thriller that keeps your attention (through at least 2/3 despite its slow pace and seemingly aimless storyline. Directed by and starring Roman Polanski, the older neighbors of the tenant are a creepy presence through his paranoid eyes similar to those in Rosemary's Baby. But the film lacks the payoff and scares of that film and interest wanes in the last third of the film. Still, it offers some provocative footage and story and is sure to interest fans of his work.
There are some similarities between this film and the more recent Peacock. Both follow a timid young man's break with reality marked by alternative egos of the opposite gender. While The Tenant is substantially darker and devoid of Peacock's comic relief and feel good scenes, the latter is the more engaging of the gender bending psychological thriller genre.
