Review of The Tenant (1976) by Peter F — 18 Feb 2014
The last entry in Polanski's unofficial "apartment trilogy", is equal parts silly and effective. It lacks the precisely observed social dread that carries his best work, and actually often descends into absurdity.
Also (although this might be just a pet-peeve), but the use of accents in this movie comes off as bizarre, especially as it's set in Paris. That said, the film still retains unmistakable craft, and is the only film I can think of to depict Paris in such a morose light.
Also, for better-or-worse Polankski's performance in this film possibly foreshadows the scandal that befell him a year after this film's release. Not so much a disappointment in Polanski's filmography, as it is a curious foot note.
