Classic Cecil B DeMille 1950's epic... Billy Crystal, you are right about Edward G Robinson being a strage casting choice. Charlton is very much like he was in Ben Hur/ Planet of the Apes - intense.
(Will Shatner must have studied these films). I was kind of rooting for Yul Brynner - that poor shlub never gets a break in his movies...
