Review of The Ten Commandments (1956) by Edith G — 22 Apr 2009
Why do I love the Ten Commandments and so many other people rush home to catch the entire movie each year? Because, despite obvious melodrama and criminal overacting. We love it....love it...love it. The scenes, the costumes, the overplayed moments.
(e.g. when Jacob is outside watching the Angel of Death take Egypt's first born). What are you kidding? No one was outside according to the Bible, watching death pass. Remakes don't come close to the excitement generated by the 1956 classic.
Yul Brenner's Ramsees was worth the watch. And Charleton Heston's Moses......beautiful to watch. Yeah, we all know it's over the top, but who cares? I'll be at home watching this classic with the same anticipation.
Wish I could get some of that fantastic marble used to create the Pharoh's palace. Anyhoo. Until next time.
