Review of The Ten Commandments (1956) by Leighton T — 24 Sep 2009
Most impressive in its size, DeMille knew how to make an epic and this one is impressive. The set and costume design are both incredible, and the cast is impressive (Yul Brynner especially), even though the acting is a little bit over-the-top from some (Anne Baxter, most notably).
The film's flow is solid and fluid despite its three and a half hour running time. The special effects are impressive, the music wonderfully bombastic and nuanced at the same time, and DeMille's direction is creative enough to keep us entertained.
Everything is so well-balanced here.
