Review of The Ten Commandments (1956) by Herbert R — 09 Feb 2013
"So let it be written, So let it be done". Movie Matt here with The Ten Commandments, the BIGGEST grossing film of 1956 & who can blame it? Great cast, great story, gorgeous visuals & REALLY good visual effects which are really ahead of its' time.
I'm not going to do a recap because the movie is so well-known that it doesn't need one. Is it bad: not at all but the second half kinda dragged a little bit after the action-packed first half but picks up again near the end of the film.
TTC was one of those roadshow films where the film was screened similar to a play & budgeted really largely & it works because in some scenes, I felt like I was watching a play than a movie. Having seen the movie as a kid & owning it (along with its' companion film Ben-Hur) on DVD, I can't say I enjoy it immensely as I once did as a kid, mainly because I wasn't old enough to grasp the material & now that I'm an adult, I have a better understanding of what the message the movie is sending.
I still like it enough to reward it 5 stars & believe me, it deserves them.
