Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Douglas P — 09 Oct 2008
A lean and mean film that has all the tarnished beauty of a poor and disheveled New York City. The film is a restrained masterpiece, an ensemble film where all characters don't carry that 'stock' weight, and fuel the story ahead.
Full of humor and suspense, and lit and shot in a no-nonsense widescreen, completely capturing the Bronx line in a fairly faithful light. Matthau doesn't ham it up too much, and gives the trademark basset hound look only once.
This is being remade by the Hollywood machine, so expect pretty faces and lots of CGI speed. Amazing that director Joseph Sargent was mainly a TV director. He truly deserved more on the Hollywood screen.
