Review of The Taking of Pelham One Two Three (1974) by Bill E — 22 Mar 2010
As I suspected after watching the remake first, the original film absolutely outclasses it on every level and makes me wonder why they bothered to remake it in the first place.
Realistic dialogue and characterization, skillful "show don't tell" storytelling incorporating a natural feel, and unforced humour all combine to create an excellent film watching experience.
A fine ending completed with a great close-up to end the tale left me completely satisfied and I know I'll enjoy it again in the future.
This provides an example of how far Hollywood films have fallen in the last 30 years. Little touches like using quick vignettes of crowd conversation to create that natural feeling. No character speaking lines is superfluous, yet they aren't highlighted unnecessarily either. Each has a character that is readily acknowledged and that is that. I also highly appreciated the lack of over dramatic responses to situations that added to a sense of realism.
I could watch movies made with this ethic all the time and be a happier viewer for the experience. I'm inspired to start watching more 70s films as a result.
