Review of The Grifters (1990) by George W — 02 Jan 2013
Classic Frears shtick - take a very dark tale and give it the treatment. Lots of light, glossy sets, the only darkness is in shadow. This is Merchant/Ivory mise en scene. Token symbolism dominates. So instead of visceral film noir you end up with a sanitised coffee table version. Its Oedipus putting on shades instead of blinding himself.
This is Polanski territory.
