Review of The Sword in the Stone (1963) by Ross M — 26 Aug 2009
This was always one of my favorite disney films as a kid, watching it now it doesn't quite stand up. Its not really a film about the arthurian legend, as that only really comes into it in the last five minutes, its more a series of set pieces, in which merlin shows off his magic.
Theres also something I only noticed now, but throughout the film merlin teaches arthur that in order to make something of himself in the world he needs to use his brain, however its through forgetfulness that he even stumbles across the sword, pulling it from the stone to become king.
