Review of The Sword in the Stone (1963) by Ryan H — 27 Jul 2014
Disney's take on the Arthurian legend comes across a bit like an extended after school special on the importance of higher learning.
While the background paintings are stunning and the character models delightfully charming, the films started a trend of recycling animations, which seems a little lazy by Disney standards.
It's a cute film, one that I had enjoyed frequently as a child- Merlin is particularly likable. The decision to make him aware of modern cultures by way of time travel was an interesting spin.
It's pretty typical of 1960's Disney- jazzy, musical and friendly, although not quite as funny as I remember it.
I do, however, still feel bad for the little girl squirrel. She just wanted love, damn it. Poor squirrel.
