Review of The Sword in the Stone (1963) by Niek S — 14 Feb 2010
Disney tends to do this more often: they take a famous legend or fairy tale, tell that story in less than 30 minutes and fill the remaining 50 or 60 minutes with (comedy) subplots. That worked out well in Snow white, where the seven dwarves have shitloads of screentime, and it works perfectly for The Sword in the Stone too. Here, the 'Arthur pulls the sword out of the stone and becomes king' plot literally takes only five minutes, while the other 75 consititute of Merlin trying to teach the young Arthur/Wart about science.
It was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, and it still is a joy to watch.
