Review of The Swimmer (1968) by Jim V — 12 Jun 2007
It's a contrived idea, one you could see so easily as a play or short story, but the tight focus gives it a powerful resonance. Burt Lancaster, showing again how impressive he is as an actor, plays a man on what appears to be a casual journey through the swimming pools of his friends.
As the mood, the weather and the state of the pools decline it's clear that something is pushing at his psyche. The inevitable Freudian release hits like the lightning outside. It's always a shame that 'reveal' movies can't be enjoyed as much ever again, but that first journey through the pools is something to take great pleasure in.
