Review of The Swimmer (1968) by Robert M — 15 May 2010
Hypnotic. I had read about this movie and approached it a little hesitantly. A guy runs from pool to pool "swimming" across his upper class county all the way home. It could be good; it could be bad.
It was refreshingly interesting and extremely interesting. Burt Lancaster is a fantastic actor who, after making as much money as he wanted and winning an Oscar, decided to continue working and chose some extremely challenging and risky roles.
This is definitely one of them. He's perfectly suited for a man who just isn't completely in touch with reality. It's because of him--and the scenarios he reacts to--that we learn of his fragile sense of reality.
Great cinematography. This could never have been made at any other time in Hollywood. This was just before Coppola, Scorsese, Shrader, Arthur Penn, Dennis Hopper and Peter Fonda started making movie for their generation.
This predates them and yet is definitely part of their movement in terms of theme, risks and storytelling.
