Review of The Sweet Hereafter (1997) by Jason Y — 02 May 2004
(DVD)(First Viewing, 2 Egoyan films seen).
A small community is torn apart by a tragic accident which kills most of the town's children. A lawyer (Ian Holm) visits the victims' parents in order to profit from the tragedy by stirring up the their anger and launching a class action suit against anyone they can blame..
When trying to formulate my best films of the 90s list, I came across The Sweet Hereafter. I had only heard of it, but after looking into it for a minute I saw the name Atom Egoyan. And I was disappointed. I saw his Felicia's Journey a while back and couldn't stand it. I admired parts of it but was left completely unsatisfied. Let's just say I had the exact opposite reaction to The Sweet Hereafter. My girlfriend saw it a few years ago but shut it off after 30 minutes or so. She wasn't too fond of it. I have convinced her to try it again, because this film really is amazing. I will be sure to revisit Felicia's Journey, and I can't wait to see Exotica.
