Review of The Sun Also Rises (2007) by Jay S — 15 Sep 2007
Randomly saw this movie as it was playing in the superhuge Wang Fu Jing mall in central Beijing. I had no idea what to expect, which is a good thing as it delivers a disjointed, rapid-paced, comedic, yet surreal experience against the backdrop of 1976 communist China. It sort of felt like a Chinese version of a David Lynch film, postmodern themes and all, which in and of itself deserves mention.
From the split and intertwined story-lines of seemingly unrelated characters, to haunting visuals, silhouettes against the dessert sky, flaming tarp floating in the wind, to the absolute ridiculousness of the characters and situations that can only be excused for their intrigue and beauty, this is definitely a different Chinese movie experience.
It's one of those movies that leaves me confused, not only about what the movie was about, but also about how I felt about the movie. Whatever it was though, it was definitely an experience worth having.
