Review of Hannah Gadsby: Nanette (2018) by Jay S — 06 Jul 2018
Comedy is Dead. In today's world, it is becoming virtually impossible to make jokes without being attacked or laughing at a joke without feeling guilty. Hannah has found an interesting way to walk this tightrope, making careful mildly funny jokes, then occasionally preach to the audience on identity politics to give them permission to laugh.
The result is "kind of" a comedy show, which is also somewhat unsatisfying (which appears to have been her goal). Of course the critics reviews will be 100% since they don't dare be branded hateful for less than stellar review.
Well played Hannah. She says she is tired of self-deprecating humor, but then proceeds with deprecation of others (which is of course all under the PC umbrella and for a good cause, so it's OK). "Pull up your socks white guys" she says.
But perhaps she needs to pull hers up as well. She refuses to be reduced to a mere identity of lesbian, then repeatedly reduces others to a mere identity. In short, If you love identity politics, you may love this show (or at least claim too among like-minded friends).
If you are tired of identity politics, you will tire of Nanette. I enjoyed much of her spiel, the first half is mildly funny and interesting. She had some good points, but I think maybe this would be better as a TED talk or something, it's not a comedy show.
Perhaps, she is launching a career as a mildly funny advocate. If so (I hope so), I wish her luck. Her views/jokes about mental illness/artists were the best part. The one thing I agree with most is when Hannah speaks as to what she identifies as and says "I'm just tired.
" Yes, she is tired.
