Review of The Stuff (1985) by Michael T — 14 Oct 2009
Some people find Larry Cohen's films to be somewhat uneven but I have always enjoyed them. The guy has a first rate imagination and comes up with some pretty interesting concepts. In this one, Michael Moriarty is an industrial spy hired to discover the secret behind a new desert which has taken the American consumer by force and is threatening traditional desert makers.
The problem is that the stuff may be alive and may be bent on controlling and, ultimately, consuming the consumers. Yikes. A bit of heavy handed social satire, but Cohen's tongue is in his cheek and the film is a lot of fun.
With Paul Sorvino as the leader of a right-wing paramilitary survivalist group and Garrett Morris as "Famous Amos"-type celebrity cookie manufacturer.
