Review of The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) by James R — 25 Mar 2018
A sort of kinda sequel/reboot of the original film The Strangers (2008). This time around we do follow the same three killers from the first film, but with a bit of a twist. This film follows a family who is taking their daughter Kinsey (Bailee Madison) to a boarding school since she's a "rebel" and they just don't know what to do with her.
The concerning parents are Cindy (Christina Hendricks) and Mike (Martin Henderson). Also tagging along against his own free will is Kinsey's brother Luke (Lewis Pullman). The family has a lot of issues that they seem to bury away and unfortunately the movie just doesn't ever really get to address them.
The family stops at their uncles house who lives in a trailer park. When they arrive they notice there's no one else there and for the most part it seems...abandoned. Soon enough the family realizes something horrific has happened and that a group of people are planning on taking them out one by one.
The movie pays some cool moments/homage to 80's horror b films. It has a pretty cool soundtrack that work with some of the horrific shots. For the most part the family doesn't have too much character and I didn't care too much what happened to em since the plot is paper thin.
The movie has the trope of having characters make some really bone headed decisions, but hey all in all I would say it's worth a matinee or moviepass usage! Overall, it does have some jump scares and some parts are creepy, but not as creepy (at least to me) as the 2008 original film.
Horror fans take a look everyone else just wait to rent it!
