Review of The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018) by Drew T — 12 Oct 2018
As a fan of the original, which touted a deeply disturbing motive of "Because you were home" the sequel seems forced and contrived. Horror movie tropes aside, this film is rampant with could've-should've-would'ves.
Each step seems like a lesson in common-sense. Every action, by all of the main characters, seems like a calculated step towards "un-action". At one point a main character has the option to kill an antagonist (with an overly dramatic filming choice of a hammer of a firearm cocking back slowly) only to have them provide one of the killers underserved mercy.
Additionally, in true 90s horror fashion we have a last-minute jump-scare that adds nothing to an already tired trend. Avoid this weak attempt at a sequel. There are plenty of movies in the genre that help to add to the lore of their intended message but this one simply goes to show what not to do.
It should be considered an insult that films like The Purge and it's numerous sequels "did it better".
