Review of The Straight Story (1999) by Lindsey J — 06 May 2011
After his brother, Lyle, has a stroke, Alvin Straight crosses 260 miles of American countryside on a lawnmower rigged with a trailer, to see the sibling to whom he hasn't spoken in ten years. A slow, gentle pace, beautiful cinematography, natural sounds of the countryside intermingled with an unobtrustive score, and a wonderful performance from Richard Farnsworth.
This is a story of gentle folk, common courtesy, age and its supposed wisdom, the scars of trauma, the ties that bind, and tenacity of spirit. Loved it.
