Review of The Straight Story (1999) by Michael E — 06 Sep 2008
This is a extraordinary film by Genius David Lynch. Richard Farnsworth does a remarkable job playing Alvin Straight in this true story of an old man who travels 240 miles in the course of six weeks on a lawnmower to visit is brother who recently had a stroke.
Lynch takes a different turn at making a linear (or Straight for puns sake) narrative story without his usual dark mood and ominous undertone and successfully directs a heartwarming G rated film about family, love and redemption.
The cinematography is outstanding as Lynch returns to his middle-America heartland roots and triumphantly captures the people and culture in a beautifully odd way. This is a must see for anybody.
