A confident film about drive, sacrifice, courage, kindness and a horrendous kick in the balls. A neither flattering nor mocking but very illuminating depiction of Chinese peasant life. A broader theme informs as well: Refracted through the stultifying monad of state bureaucracy, justice is always too little or too much, never proportional.
