An early work of Zhang Yimou, this is a simple story told in a stark, almost documentary style, which may surprise those familiar with his later films. Gong Li is endearing in her understated performance as the central figure of what is essentially a parable on bureaucracy and a commentary on the hierarchies of Chinese society.
