Review of The Story of Adèle H. (1975) by Nate W — 11 Jun 2010
"The Story of Adele H." tells the real life account of Adele Hugo (daughter of renowned French writer Victor) and her doomed mission to win the hand of ex-beau Lt. Albert Pinson in marriage. At first the film feels very constricted, as many of Truffaut's films do, but as Adele's love continues to go unrequited and her obsession grows to the point of chronic lying and stalking Lt.
Pinson, Truffaut loosens up and we become more fascinated by her uncontainably passionate character. Much credit for this must go to Isabelle Adjani's marvelous performance, which bursts with emotion and vitality.
