Review of The Story of Adèle H. (1975) by Andrey B — 11 Oct 2017
Graceful movie, elegant direction, exquisite scenes and cinematography, refined acting from Isabelle Adjani - I can only think of superlatives when speaking about this movie. This is a bleak tale about a woman's slow degradation and ultimately sinking into dementia for the love of a man.
It's an unpleasant journey but based of the true story of the second daughter of France's great poet Victor Hugo. The mood of the film is quite unusual and ethereally beautiful like the scene in the cemetery where Albert reject s Adele's declarations of love.
And the background of the movie is unusual too, the American Civil war, things are not certain yet; the blend of the French and English languages adds to the confusion.
