Review of The Steel Helmet (1951) by Landen C — 05 Sep 2007
As is often the case with Fuller, he works magic with incredibly limited resources. Just imagine. He pulled this together with a 10 day shooting schedule! There's some initial awkwardness, but that adds to the ramshackle feel.
It would definitely be worth re-examining his later films after seeing this one. There are obvious hints at what was to come in Shock Corridor and beyond. It was wonderful to see him touching on race in the same daring way that extended all the way into his 80's work.
I generally prefer his pulpier work to his war films and westerns, but this is the real deal- the first pure Sam Fuller film.
