Review of The Steel Helmet (1951) by Mitchell W — 22 Sep 2008
Quite possibly Fuller's best, and a great example of what B-movies were capable of back in the day. For starters, the turnaround time is amazing - it was shot over 10 days in October, about four months after the war began.
Even more striking is its blunt but complex dissection of race relations in the U.S., treading further than any prestige picture would've dared. Decades later, it holds up well without ever seeming preachy.
Spike Lee's upcoming picture works like a history lesson; arriving before the civil rights movement, this one means so much more.
