Review of The Steel Helmet (1951) by Brad G — 20 Jan 2011
"Dead man's nothing but a corpse, nobody cares who he is now." The first American film set during the Korean War, The Steel Helmet has to be one of the most brutal, unflinching flicks to ever showcase the infantry.
Forget Saving Private Ryan, forget Apocalypse Now, forget Platoon. Gene Evans' Sgt. Zack is tired, disgusting, angry to the point of hateful, and he's also the smartest man trudging through this living hell.
It's a knockout performance and should not be forgotten. Unlike most films of the era, Sam Fuller made a movie without any glorification; The Steel Helmet feels honest, it delivers violence randomly and without a shine.
Flat, horrible violence. A classic. VF.
