Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Dan B — 12 Dec 2009
I'm actually very sad that I'm not giving this a higher rating. It's undoubtedly a stunningly accurate reflection of divorce, but it's so strangely edited that it's hard for me to look at it as a near-perfect picture.
I have a ton of respect for Baumbach for making this in such an uncompromising way, and every actor (save maybe Mr. Baldwin) is on their A-game. Some of the quirks aren't as endearing as others, but it saves itself from driving over the edge into pretentiousness more than once.
A very good, not great, film.
