Review of The Squid and the Whale (2005) by Sally Z — 27 Mar 2011
A wonderfully written and well acted little film.
It's a story simply about a separating middle-class family, in what reminded me of a less extravagant Wes Anderson film. Although the characters are intelligent, raw, and sharp, they are each genuinely unapologetic about their oblivious bad choices. But despite the seriousness of the plot, there's a lot of hilarious dry comedy packed into the characters.
In the end, whether you find it hilarious or disturbing, I think there's also lot of lessons that can be taken away about dynamics of family relationships.
