Review of The Spy Who Loved Me (1977) by Nick D — 09 Sep 2008
Moore #3 has Russians! And hot ones at that! Detente is the theme of the movie. Bond bags the female Russian spy even after she finds out he offed her lover. Sadly, the trend of thinner Bond Girls continues. The theme to "SWLM" is "Nobody Does It Better," the second best one after "LALD." The villain is a shipping magnate gone mad who lives in his Jules Verne-esque underwater mansion (and earth-destroying HQ) - just an outrageous plan - and it takes the East and West to defeat him. This Bond film could be re-made for today's problems with terrorism (after all, what is SPETRE but Al-queda, right?) and the stated goal of unifying nation-states against it.
The Lotus Espirit makes its watery debut and the most ridiculous Bond Super Car ever!
After 3 Moore Bonds, I have to say he did a pretty damn good job of it. His first three are not that far off from being as good as Connery's first three (Dr. No, From Russia..., and Goldfinger).
