I am forever fascinated by the era of movie stardom when the men looked like alcoholic fathers to whom working out meant yelling at the young wife or taking the yacht out for a spin. Case in point, Richard Burton, the exact right person for le Carre's depressive approach to spy stories, a role that if cast today, would probably go to Charlie Hunnam.
