Review of The Spy Who Came In from the Cold (1965) by Bob K — 26 Feb 2018
Engaging film that does justice to Le Carre's fiction.
Just watched it again. (2/2018).
I was struck at how this scenario no longer exists, and at how well Martin Ritt and company capture the bleakness of the situation. Richard Burton is good here, but he is upstaged by the other actors quite a bit. Basically, he's Richard Burton, with his intense eyes and hypnotic voice, more than he's Alec Leamas. What's really remarkable about this film is what it was saying and when it was made. 1965--only 3 years after the first Bond film, Dr. No. It was presenting a very different, and I'm sure much more accurate, perspective on espionage.
