Review of The Spanish Prisoner (1997) by Annabelle S — 05 Jun 2009
My entryway into Mamet, and I humbly believe there's not a suitably more pretentious way to do so. Its great. Its lyrical, its consistent, it sweeps you up. It defies Mamet's usual male plumage masterstroking.
All of the actors are note perfect. Its far more brilliant than most paranoia thrillers it cribs from. Rather than merely being a paranoia thriller, it grows into a credibly new intellectual space. Rather than simply being an intellectual movie with no stable plot or ending, the film sees its way to a satisfying conclusion (which is to say: unsettling, but highly believable).
