Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Jim L — 01 Feb 2017
The Space Between Us, this seemed like a very tacky love story from the trailers, but to my surprise, it was anything but that. The basic plot is that Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, begins an online friendship with Tulsa, a teen in Colorado. On his maiden voyage to Earth, the 16-year-old finally gets to experience all the joys and wonders of a world he could only read about. Problems arise when scientists discover that Gardner's organs can't withstand the atmosphere. United with Tulsa and on the run, the interplanetary visitor races against time to unravel the mysteries of how he came to be, and where he belongs in the universe. The way the showed us his birth with the compelling music and great camerawork, then the death was powerful, and they explained to us why they can't bring him back in a very good way, making it easy to understand for anyone seeing this movie. Asa Butterfield is phenomenal in this film, he brings a lot of charisma and humour to his character and he really throws himself into the role of Gardener. Two things that always annoy me when I see a movie are YouTubers in 'Cameos' and Product Placement and unfortunately TSBU has both, there wasn't a lot of YouTubers in the film but the two I spotted were sWooZie and Joey Graceffa. sWooZie was a reporter in the beginning of the film and Joey was just a student at the High School Tulsa (Britt Robertson) attends, he had no lines and just stood there, it is just a nitpick of mine. but then there is the product placement, there was a lot of product placement in the beginning of the movie when Gardner first lands on Earth, everything from Volvo, Chevy, Mars, Greyhound etc. etc. I have to say, the writing is superb, great one-liners and a lot of emotion, and the beautiful camerawork, editing and music helped!
Overall The Space Between Us is a nice romantic Sci-FI movie that will make ou laugh and cry.
