Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Frame R — 03 Apr 2018
Move over Moonlight, the next Best Picture winner is here!
THE SPACE BETWEEN US.
I know, I know. Who cares about this movie, right? But I was not expecting such a dreadful movie when I went to the movie theatre. Space exploration is about daring to get to the unknown, it's about discovering something meaningful about ourselves. But standing beside Hidden Figures, Life and Alien: Covenant, this seemed to be this years most uninspired offer. And wow, was I right! The Space Between Us is the cinematic equivalent of being suffocated in outer space. The directing is so poor that it seems like it was made by a Disney Channel director. Wait, what? It was by the same director of the Hanna Montana movie? Still, that doesn't explain this eyesore. I actually very much enjoyed the Hanna Montana movie, it had a beating heart, while this film seems dead. The performances go from boring to insufferable, from Asa Butterfield whose career will be interesting to watch when he'll no longer be able to play the awkward teen mainly by Britt Robertson who, in all her plain way of existing seems to blend in just fine in train wreck movies like The Longest Ride and Tomorrowland. The editing serves as a villain, the plot is convoluted following and the cliches abound. So much so that I couldn't restrain myself from eye-rolling to the point I had to look away. I really don't want to find out who wrote the movie before I saw it, but this was by Allan Loeb, the mastermind behind the screenplay of Collateral Beauty. Coincidence? I think not! This is just a case of talentless screenwriter filling his pockets in Hollywood because apparently there's no one out there with voice and wit to fill his shoes. Deplorable movie, let's not mention it ever again... SPOILERS - The "I'm your father" twist at the end is idiotic. When the biggest twist in the history of film happened just two days ago, it will take more to surprise me...
