Review of The Space Between Us (2017) by Katherine C — 11 May 2018
SPOILERS AHEAD! Definitely a good concept for a movie. However, the movie lacked a satisfying ending. We are introduced to this character that knows only Mars and longs for his home of Earth. We want this character to be happy and see the beauty in earth that we see.
And although we do get a taste of Garderner experiencing the joys of earth such as rain, mountains, and the ocean, the movie swiftly turns sour with an unneeded turn of events. Gardner finds out the man he thought was his dad was actually his uncle, he attempts suicide, and then learns that his real dad is the old professer.
Which is kinda creepy considering their massive age gap, but honestly it's 2018 and people are doing whatever they want now, but that's beside the point. Furthermore, Gardner gets sent back to Mars, ultimately to save his life.
Which makes his journey to earth somewhat pointless. Obviously not completely pointless or else he never would've fallen in love with Tulsa. But seriously, this kid travels to Earth, a planet he has never experienced, falls in love, almost commits suicide, and ends up going home.
Additionally, since the movie is a romance, I would've liked to see more with Gardner and Tulsa's relationship. Not gonna lie, my heart did melt quite a few times. But I wish we had more time to see their relationship grow.
Anyway, it wasn't a terrible movie, but I was left extremely unsatsified.
