Review of The Sons of Katie Elder (1965) by Michael Y — 22 Dec 2010
John Wayne and three other amigos, including Dean Martin, star in a Western murder mystery where it would seem like many people could be a suspect.
On the day of Katie Elder's funeral, her four sons reunite to find out who's been swindling her money and property, and who killed their father. The boys might not get along all that well, but when it seems like the four are down-right trouble, a spark of their mother's influence and character shows up. This American Western is pretty enjoyable, even for my taste. It shows a little bit of mystery and the town's respect for Katie Elder that influences other people's actions, proving that hard work and love pay off.
I like Henry Hathaway's way of making Westerns. He does then in a different manner that doesn't need big, desert landscapes. Instead, this movie has more of a town exterior with more of a wilderness setting too. I also enjoyed the music score of this movie at times.
I found this John Wayne movie to be a bit more enjoyable than other ones, but this movie doesn't really have the significant punch that others do.
