Review of The Sons of Katie Elder (1965) by Daniel K — 26 May 2010
3: There are sections that reminded me of McClintock!, which is a good sign. It's quite possible I'm underrating the picture, as it is indeed a very entertaining western. It attempts to follow in the footsteps of far grander pictures like Rio Bravo, which is good, as a large part of the power of westerns lies in the reliability of the genre.
The story is quite compelling, even if it is very predictable. For the most part, westerns are not meant to masquerade as mysteries or thrillers though. The locations are very adequate. The plot is compelling.
The performances are solid, if less than noteworthy. The title is perhaps better than the picture, but the character of Katie Elder is remarkably well developed considering the woman never appears on the screen.
