Review of The Smurfs (2011) by Isaac J — 31 Jul 2013
The Smurfs is exactly what you'd expect: Celebrity voices and boring slapstick. The Smurfs themselves look disturbing in CG and rarely even do any thing of worth. The making of Clumsy the main character is dubious, considering his minor role in the original show.
Papa Smurf, Brainy Smurf, Smurfette, Grumpy Smurf, and Hefty Smurf (Made solely for this film) all show little dimension beyond their established personalities. The celebrities don't add any thing to their characters other than extra advertisement.
The lone bright spots of the film are Neil Patrick Harris as the everyman and Hank Azaria as Gargamel, whe is obviously having a ton of fun with the role. If the film was as much fun as those two actors, then the experience may have been more tolerable, but they only manage to cushion the blow of this overly childish, boring, and all around uninteresting mess of a film.
