Review of The Shrine (2010) by Joe J — 01 Aug 2012
Carmen (Cindy Sampson) is a journalist who's looking for her big story that will propel her career. She thinks she finds it when an American named Eric (Ben Lewis) disappears while backpacking in Europe. She discovers his last journal entry came from a small town in Poland, so she goes with her photographer boyfriend Marcus (Aaron Ashmore) and her assistant Sara (Meghan Heffern) to find out what happened.
They discover a small town that's run by a strange cult-like society, and a strange mist in the woods. When they go to investigate the mist, Carmen and Sara enter it and discover an evil looking shrine that seems to be alive.
Emerging from the mist, the group is hunted by the cult, which culminates to a shocking conclusion that leaves you wondering who the good and the bad guys really are.
Sure, this film pretty much copies any of the millions of other low-budget horror films out there, but the acting in the film is the saving grace, plus the twist at the end which, if you're a diehard fan of these types of horror films, you'll see coming, but if you don't, you'd be surprised by it.
