Review of The Shootist (1976) by Jon K — 19 Dec 2008
I'm not a fan of the Western genre by any means. However, this was a very intriguing movie. A gunman from the old West is dying and he has to decide how he wants to die. Should he just way for the cancer to ravage his body? Should he allow one of his many enemies to receive the glory for killing him? Or.
..is there another way? This seems like a very different type of Western than I'm used to seeing. Rather than seeing a plethora of gunfights, you only see a couple. I expected a well thought out good guy/bad guy rivalry culminating into a showdown between the two and you didn't really see that either.
Perhaps, that's why I liked it. It wasn't the most predictable. It seemed like a good sendoff for the Duke as it was John Wayne's last film. As a movie lover and a Western hater, I recommend seeing it just to see something differently and see a part of a man that made a genre.
