Review of The Shootist (1976) by Lynda M — 18 Nov 2009
Wayne doesn't seem to act in this odd film, more saying good bye to film making itself, with a sentimental sadness in his heart. Sad that he played so many dumb hero roles shooting red indians like bottles on a wall which he himself regretted, twas like a replacement that he could never go to war himself to serve.
He was a movie star, not an actor, and at times his real life was on the screen, where his own illness was part of his characters. Good performances or bad he was always ' John Wayne', the true larger than life figures who when he died after this film, no one even tried to fill in his shoes.
