Beautifully shot in Newfoundland and featuring a stunning cast including Kevin Spacey, Julianne Moore, Judi Dench and Cate Blanchett, The Shipping News serves to be a fascinating exploration of the hidden past and leading a new life after devastation.
However, the exploration is somehow shallow and doesn't touch upon the mankind it means to. The revelation of Judi Dench's dark past is somehow unremarkable. The entire story seems so scattering and the audience is left in midst without a way out.
