Review of The Shining (1980) by Mark W — 14 Sep 2014
Stanley Kubrick crafts a chillingly nihilistic odyssey into a surrealist, utterly overwhelming nightmare. The harsh repellent atmosphere permeates every frame, as if true primordial evil was bottled up and added to the film print.
Jack Nicholson gives an excruciatingly twitchy performance as a cruel, abusive, reprehensible man, whose mundane human flaws are elevated to rambling axe wielding extremes by a force of absolute true evil.
The film is an unrelenting, brutal assault and its layered complexities ensures that its themes are still being argued and discussed to this day. Essential viewing, one of the greatest examples of horror filmaking ever.
