Review of The Shining (1980) by Gregoire B — 21 Oct 2015
Surprisingly, The Shining is one of the most overrated movie ever. It only relies on Nicholson's performance and a few catchy lines to depict a journey into madness and darkness. And because of that, the length is nearly unbearable, the other performances are forgettable at best, the dialogs are simple, the photography is non-existent.
Kubrick also uses the genre to put anything he wants in the movie regardless of its relevance. What's supposed to be a tensed and scary atmosphere ends up like a patchwork of clichés and ideas. In my opinion, the more he deviated from King's novel, the more he lost himself in his own madness at the expense of a good scenario.
Luckily the silver lining that is Nicholson keeps you entertained and not too bored.
