Review of The Shining (1980) by Aaron V — 30 Oct 2013
While beautifully shot, and featuring a masterful use of steady cam and art design, I felt Jack Nicholson's performance was lacking a believable character arc, he came across as slightly unhinged from the start and I never saw his descent into madness as a transition for the character.
Shelly Duvall's performance was terribly unrealistic, while Danny Lloyd blew me away as one of the most realistic possessed child performances I have seen. While I do believe the film has lots of artistic merit, ultimately I found it lacking a truly horrific experience.
There was little haunted about this house and the most disturbing scenes were those of spousal abuse Jack's Wife.
